Things to see and do around Burtersett
Situated in the Northern Dales, Hawes is one of Englands highest market towns. Hawes is a picturesque town, with a wide range of shops, craft galleries, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants.
A weekly Tuesday market is held in Hawes, as is a Farmers Mart, which featured in the 'All Creatures Great and Small' TV series as 'Darrowby Cattle Mart'. Hawes also plays host to a range of events, including the Hawes Gala in June. For those who love walking, Hawes is a great place to be, as it lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the 250 mile footpath, the Pennine Way, passes through here; ideal for long distance walkers to stay. For those who prefer a more gentle walk, there are plenty more around.
The town of Hawes is famous for being the home of Wensleydale cheese at the Hawes creamery, and another popular tourist attraction is the Dales Countryside Museum, located at the old Hawes railway station. The recently re-opened Wensleydale Railway runs trains between Redmire, Leyburn, Bedale and Leeming Bar, and hopes to restore the service through Hawes to Garsdale before too long.
Nearby attractions include Aysgarth Falls, a triple flight of waterfalls from the River Ure over almost a 1 mile stretch down to mid Wensleydale. These beautiful falls were visited by the likes of Ruskin, Turner and Wordsworth, and also featured on the television programme 'Seven Natural Wonders' as a wonder of the North, and the upper fall appeared in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Great Shunner Fell is also a nearby attraction, being the 3rd highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, and the highest point above Wensleydale at 716 metres above sea level. The Pennine Way passes straight over its summit, on the way from Hawes to Keld.
